Which author made me want to be a writer? | Venture Galleries

9780688037437I have a new post out over at Venture Galleries. I talk about my writing and reading inspiration and why I’m unable to pinpoint only one author.

“I have read so many books over the years I’ve forgotten most. A few do stand out, though, that had made an impression on me at the time I read them, but if I’m to attempt an answer, the result would always be the same as below:

Everyone I have ever read who showed me the beauty and magic of words and imaginary real worlds.

I need to explain…”

I also talk about A.J. Quinnell. An author I wish more people knew about.

Please read the article here. I hope you enjoy it.

  1. There’s no way I could pin point which writer or book inspired me to want to be a writer. I wanted to write from the moment I could read, maybe before I could read. So there’s no way I could boast someone like Hemingway or Poe or Tolkien. Um, “The Pokey Little Puppy” perhaps?

  2. I do remember as a kid being blown away by the pyschological elements in Poe’s “The Telltale heart”, or how I fell in love with Vampire’s after reading Dracula. Or realizing how much I enjoyed fantasy after the “Hobbit” And probably the first and only novel to scare the shit out of me, King’s “It.” It is interesting the writing styles and genres that resonate with you as a child and stick with you through your entire life.

  3. When I was a kid, I enjoyed (and still do) R.L. Stine and Dean Koontz, but I never thought of being a writer until two years ago. I just started this whole thing on a whim. I do like to see different perspectives, though. Thanks for sharing, Woelf! 🙂

    1. I used to fanfic the crap out of my literary heroes as child to entertain myself and althoug I wanted to be a writer so long I never thought I could actually write until a couple of years ago. Funny, I dont care if I can or not, anymore. I’ll keep reading and writing, and I’ll keep trying to grow and we’ll see where the road takes me. 🙂
