I’m embracing classic-back-to-basics fantasy this week. Manuel Castanon is a self-taught artist and freelance illustrator from Mexico who loves epic fantasy and historical realism in equal measures. He has worked for many clients including Paizo, Evil Hat, Games Workshop, Hex, Cryptozoic, and a host of others.

I love the vibrant composition and smooth textures. Manuel’s style is both fantastic and grounded and the combination of the two creates a wonderful tone that immerses you in the fantasy world without much effort. This, for me, is classic fantasy without the gritty darkness and gloom of contemporary fantasy. Manuel’s style is definitely in line with Paizo’s house style and what you’d normally expect to find on their books.

And that is that for this week’s “Art of Fantasy.” I’m at a crossroads again with regards to my blog but I think I should rather talk about it in a separate post. I’ll need your help as I’m planning to ask for advice.
